The Simpsons Episode Rankings: Season 5

It's obvious from many of the episode titles in the fifth season that the writer's began to focus the show more on Homer than the other family members, as his popularity had certainly grown during the third and fourth seasons. It also seemed that, starting with the third season, Homer began to lose more IQ points each year - though this season does feature some of the best Homer lines. And when David Mirkin took over as showrunner during this season, he definitely set out to insert more jokes into each episode. In a given episode, there's probably one joke every five seconds or so.  Overall the season isn't quite up to the level of season 4, but it's still hilarious and the jokes never get old. I think many people recognize Cape Feare as the greatest Simpsons episode of all-time. I don't know that I'm ready to declare that yet, but it's definitely one of my favorites.  There are a few dull moments/episodes this season, but mostly, every episode is pretty classic.

1. Cape Feare
2. Marge On the Lam
3. Deep Space Homer
4. Treehouse of Horror IV
5. Bart's Inner Child
6. $pringfield
7. Burns' Heir
8. Secrets of a Successful Marriage
9. Homer the Vigilante
10. Homer's Barbershop Quartet
11. Bart Gets an Elephant
12. Rosebud
12. Lady Bouvier's Lover
13. Homer Loves Flanders
14. Bart Gets Famous
15. Homer Goes to College
16. The Boy Who Knew Too Much
17. The Last Temptation of Homer
18. Lisa vs. Malibu Stacy

Looks like we've got first and last the same as expected. Skinner-centric episodes tend to fizzle out. The top 8 on my list are pure gold though. Consistently hilarious throughout. This is such a great season though, that even the bottom episodes on my list are still ones that I pretty much love. I know you'd agree. Still, you're right, tis no Season 4.
